Canada offers an excellent range of wood products.

Some of the key species from Western Canada (British Columbia) are –

  1. Douglas Fir.Douglas-fir is a great choice for the manufacturing of door and windows, furniture, and general millwork. Fir wood is commonly used worldwide for building and construction purposes due to its superior strength and availability in large dimensions. Douglas-fir, due to a very high strength-to-weight ratio, is the number one choice for glu-lam beam construction.Fir wood is also recognised as a valuable and quality wood for interior applications such as doors and windows.
  2. Western Hemlock
    Western hemlock is the first choice for mouldings and interior woodworking. It is also widely used in furniture, doors, and windows. As hemlock wood is non-resinous, this species takes any stains or finishes extremely well.Hemlock wood is a high quality wood from B.C. is suited to a variety of applications as it is easy to work with.
  3. Western Red Cedar.Western red cedar is a popular wood for outdoor furniture and playground equipment. With its dark, attractive colouring, this wood also has many interior applications.
  4. Spruce Pine Fir

    White spruce and lodgepole pine mainly make up the spruce-pine-fir (SPF) group. A small percentage of subalpine fir is also included in this species grouping. The dimensional stability of SPF and the superior gluing properties make it popular in the prefabrication industry.

    Due to its high strength–to-weight ratio, it is ideal for modular houses, interior finishing, boxes and packing cases. This species group is often used in the manufacturing of flat-packed modular furniture.

  5. Yellow Cedar
    A species quite unique to Canada, yellow cedar wood grows so slowly it requires over 200 years to reach a marketable size.The wood is incredibly easy to work and prized for applications in decorative panelling, furniture, mouldings and cabinet work. Yellow cedar wood’s fine, even texture makes it a top choice for carvings and turnings. It is sometimes used in speciality construction projects such as temples and shrines.
